Game Theory and a Cup of Coffee

This is an article from the BLOG of VINOD MISHRA. Cup or Coffee.

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor.

Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to hot coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: 'If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones.. While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and were eyeing each other ' s cups.

Now if life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life doesn ' t change. Some times, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it.'

Don ' t let the cups drive you.. Enjoy the coffee instead

Some Additional Thoughts

After reading the article I was reminded of the theory from the famous personality ( Nobel Laureate ) Sir John Nash with his great Contribution to GAME THEORY, in which he clearly mentions that it is not necessary that everyone in the team should perform his/her 100% to get the best result, but instead we can perform less but still the net result of the team should be higher. So in Life it is not necessary to have all the best things to enjoy the best but since the motive in the above example was to enjoy Coffee, so the selection of the Cup is immaterial.

The Bridge between Data Warehouse and Image Processing

A new approach to fast content based color image retrieval in a wavelet-based hierarchical structure with data warehousing techniques. To tackle the key issues such as image data indexing, similarity measures, search methods and query processing in retrieval for large color image archives, we extend the concepts of conventional data warehouse and image database to image data warehouse for effective color indexing. In contrast to the existing systems which employ a fixed mechanism for similarity measurement, we propose to integrate wavelet multiresolution decomposition with data summarization for hierarchical color representation and flexible similarity measurement.

In addition, a guided search scheme is introduced in conjunction with data partitioning and aggregation techniques to speed up query processing. The proposed retrieval method is tested on RGB and YUV color spaces and the experimental results demonstrates its effectiveness and efficiency for content-based color image retrieval.

This work is similar to a new feature added by Google on its search engine in which we can easily filter the images based on different features like Face, Color etc. This is one of the steps in the direction of bridging the two vast areas Data Warehosuing and Image Processing

THE TECHNOLOGICAL DIVISION

The world is different from what it was 200 yrs ago. Technology has risen to such heights that everything seems to be in the shadow of it. For example.. Telephone was invented to make world-smaller so that we could talk to even those whom could not meet. But now a days even to talk to near ones we need a phone, because we don;t want to interact in-person with everyone and want some peace and solitude. Similarly Internet was a Big invention for the century and it turned the knowledge gathering into a ease, but instead of talking friends we prefer to leave messages or scraps or use Twitter, Facebook , Orkut etc.

The trend of division continues in each and everything aspect of Life and now Human could be find divided in terms of Religion, Country, State, Caste, etc. We don;t accept people of different color , we don;t accept people of different country or we don;t like people from different religion but each and every hour we talk about UNITY and helping of needy. Everyone in the world is looking for the Growth of the Country but no one is looking forward for the Growth of the Earth. Still so many countries on Earth are under the living expectation.

Each and every day we study and analyze so many complex system but the growth which this technology is providing will it lead to a World which will sustain and keep growing or will die out due to this division.

Thanks
